The most useful part of a stucco painting estimate may be the preparation description. Two proposals can specify the same color and include very different work beneath it.

Resolve the wall condition

Identify damaged stucco, recurring stains, separated sealant, and earlier patches before painting begins. Ask which repairs are included and whether moisture concerns require investigation. Painting should follow that work, not make the evidence harder to see.

Specify cleaning and adhesion checks

Ask how dirt, loose coating, and other surface contamination will be handled without damaging the finish. Discuss a trial area where compatibility or the cleaning method is uncertain. The wall should meet the selected coating's requirements before application.

Review the product system

Request the coating name and any required primer or conditioner. The right preparation depends on the substrate, its condition, and the product instructions. Do not assume every stucco wall requires the same primer or that every “self-priming” product suits the existing surface.

Ask how readiness is determined

  • Are repairs cured and the surface ready for the proposed coating?
  • How will moisture and relevant substrate conditions be checked?
  • Are air and surface temperatures within the product limits?
  • Is there time for drying before forecast rain or dew?
  • How will adjacent windows, doors, paving, and plants be protected?

What “ready to paint” should mean in the proposal

Ask the crew to explain its acceptance criteria for the repaired surface. A calendar date alone cannot show that cleaning residue is gone, a patch is ready, or an existing coating is sound enough to retain. The proposed product instructions and assessment should inform those decisions.

For comparison, “wash and paint” leaves the repair and compatibility work undefined. A clearer scope names the repairs, cleaning approach, readiness checks, any primer or conditioner, and the finishing area. This is particularly useful when two bids list the same coating but differ substantially in preparation.

Agree on a finish sample
