A tile pattern can change an outdoor space, but the material below it and the adjoining details deserve attention first. Before committing to a patio makeover, work through these five questions with the appropriate contractor.
1. Is the existing surface suitable?
Document cracks, uneven areas, loose finishes, and earlier repairs. Ask whether those conditions require correction before another layer is installed. A decorative covering should not hide an unresolved substrate problem.
2. Where will water drain?
Explain where water currently collects and whether it approaches a doorway. Ask how the proposed assembly addresses drainage without assuming tile and grout form a waterproof system.
3. Is the material intended for the exposure?
Request the tile and setting-system information for the actual outdoor use. Discuss wet conditions, surface traction, cleaning, and compatibility. A showroom sample cannot establish that a complete assembly is appropriate for your patio.
4. What happens at the edges?
Review door thresholds, wall connections, movement joints, drains, and changes in level. Raising the finished surface can affect adjoining details, so measurements and the proposed build-up should be reviewed before ordering materials.
5. Is this a patio or an elevated balcony?
An elevated deck or balcony may need a different waterproofing and structural assessment from a slab on the ground. Do not apply a patio detail to an elevated assembly without checking its requirements.
